It was during the time when he was around 18 months, the lesion began to change in colour and texture. It then resulted in itch and bleeding... We have consulted many dermatologists, pediatricians ,surgeons and were given many different moisturisers from various doctors to soothe the pain and itch. QV, Cetaphil, you name it!
Likewise, I have also done research by reading up extensively on this condition. Sadly, there aren't many of such similar condition in Singapore.
I know there could be someone with similar condition feeling just as helpless as i was. I hope my post will enlighten you and Shane's strength can help to overcome all fear.
Age 5 - The original state of the birth mark looks like this.
Overtime, due to prolong scratching the skin texture started to change.
It was during this time, Dr Yeow from KKH called for an immediate surgery to remove the nevus. The removal would require 2 surgeries that include insertion and excision of a tissue expander.
A balloon light bag was inserted under the scalp to slowly expand the surrounding area before the bag is removed and scalp is stitched.
1st surgery: Waterbag inserted
14 Nov 2013
After the insertion, we have to go for weekly expansion whereby saline is injection into a port connected to the bag. 15cc per session at around $100 each time.
I lost count the number of sessions we went but here is a picture of Shane with his expanded waterbag.
Despite having a bump on his head, Shane had no problem with his daily routine. All his classmates at PLAY@TP took extra care of him.
21 Apr 2014 - 2nd procedure.
Prefect stitching by Dr Yeow and team.
One of the best nurse at KKH, she tried to make every jab and his stay as comfortable as possible. Always cheering him up.
Back for review at KKH. Superb planning, superb stitching!
And since then, Shane is one of the happiest child ever!
With love and care!
